director brings a variety

personal interests
and experiences to
the group, forging
a board of directors
committed to fulfilling
DNS’s mission,
maintaining its quality,
and providing strategic
planning for the future.
As such, we welcome
fresh ideas, energy,
and talent.
Our current board members are:
Niall Byers (Treasurer),
Durango, CO - Born in Chicago, Niall moved around in his youth
living in England, California, New Hampshire, Spain, and Montana,
as well as on board a schooner. He settled in Durango seven years
ago. He is a graduate of Fort Lewis College with a degree in finance.
In early 2008, Niall moved to Three Springs to manage the newest
Alpine Bank location. He and his wife Emily enjoy traveling, sporting
events, and just about every outdoor activity.
JJ Colman (Co-President), Durango, CO - Retired aquatic director, day
camp coordinator, Red Cross program instructor, and active DNS volunteer
naturalist since 2002.
Greg Ericksen (Officer), Farmington, NM - BA in Sociology and Ethnic
Studies. Fourth grade teacher at Animas Elementary in Farmington with
endorsements in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL),
Physical Education, and Reading Instruction. Currently a second-year
graduate student at the University of New Mexico.
Mark Franklin (Officer), Durango, CO - Graphic designer and owner -
Interpretive Design LLC, member of the National Association of Interpretation,
Chair of the Old Spanish Trail Association- Rio Las Animas Chapter, Co-Chair
Friends of the San Juan Skyway, Member of San Juan Citizens Alliance
- Wild San Juan Task Force.
Richard Grossman, M.D. (Vice-President), Bayfield,
CO - Obstetrician gynecologist, Durango Herald columnist
for "Population Matters!" Private
pilot. Member of the Durango Choral Society, Heartwood
Co-housing. Current Durango Nature Center thistle
killer. Active DNS volunteer naturalist.
Michelle Hall (Secretary), Durango, CO - BS in
Marketing and certified elementary education teacher.
Former instructor with the Boulder County
youth wilderness program, coordinator for Boulder Mountain
Parks in the Junior Ranger Youth Corps Program and
Environmental Education program.
Former “Red Card” wild-land firefighter for the City of Boulder
and Boulder County. Former outdoor and environmental
education instructor at the Boston University Sargent
Camp Environmental School and backpacking/canoe
guide for teens.
Gail Paulson-Hanson (Officer), Durango, CO. Owner and business manager
of Hanson Honda. Graduate of Leadership San Juan, Leadership La Plata,
and Leadership New Mexico. Member of San Juan Rotary in Farmington and
veteran DNS volunteer naturalist.
Alli Morrissey (Officer), Durango, CO - MBA, University of Minnesota.
More that twenty years of experience in executive and team development
in Fortune 100 companies in the High-tech, Manufacturing, Energy and
Banking industries and specializing in increasing operational, sales
and leadership effectiveness. Has worked in 27 countries worldwide, lived
in three, and speaks two foreign languages. Enjoys hiking, climbing and
canoeing. Active DNS volunteer naturalist.
Brenda Nelson (Officer), Durango, CO - Staff RN at Mercy Regional Medical
Center for 5 years in pre-op, infusion, and endoscopy. Volunteer with
DNS in the CDN program 1994 through 1998, continuing to volunteer in
other areas to present. Trails 2000 member. Volunteer Wilderness Information
Specialist with the San Juan Mountain Association for two years. Enthusiastic
backpacker, camper, mountain biker, hiker, skier, and dog walker.
Rick Routh (Co-President), Durango, CO - State highway traffic engineer,
Big Brother for 18 years, Rotarian for 10 years, and member of Trails
2000. Formerly a La Plata County engineer.
Sarah Strouthopoulos (Officer), Durango, CO- Masters in Elementary Education
and Creative Arts in Learning. Currently a third grade teacher at Needham
Elementary School in Durango, CO. Former outdoor and environmental educator
for Colorado Outward Bound, Longacre Expeditions, Poulter Colorado Camps,
and Boston University Sargent Camp. Teaching experience spans public,
private, environmental/outdoor education, as well as international (Japan),
and has worked with students of all ages and grade levels in a variety
of states and wilderness areas.
Dave Travieso (Officer), Durango, CO - BS in Physics, minor in Horticulture.
Volunteer naturalist and educator for DNS for almost 6 years. Currently
a volunteer for KDUR, a local community radio station. Owner/operator
of PeaceTree Organix, a local all-organic produce farm located in Durango.
