Snowshoe Program

Surviving and Thriving in Winter (STW) Program Overview

In February 2018, Animas High School sophomores spent two days with us as part of their “Inspire Week.”  On the second day, they shadowed our 6th-grade snowshoe program and put together a “Photo Journey.”  Several of these students were alumni of our programs and enjoyed the chance to get out and see the programs from a different perspective.

Surviving and Thriving in Winter
(STW) is a two-part science and winter ecology program on snowshoes for grades 3-8 in which students learn about snow science and winter animal adaptations through hands-on activities in the classroom and field. Topics covered correlate to Colorado and national science education standards for each grade.  Durango Nature Studies provides snowshoes for up to 60 students and chaperones per field program.

First, a Durango Nature Studies’ educator visits each classroom for an hour-long lesson to introduce science concepts that prepare students for a field trip. The following week, your class visits our winter site for a half-day field trip. Instructors guide small groups on snowshoes, engaging students with activities, science games, experiments, and guided explorations. These field trips solidify science standards and a sense of place through inquiry based learning in nature.

Pricing:
$10 per student (include snowshoes)*
Mileage of $0.55 per mile for schools outside of Durango
*$10 per student is subsidized by grants and contributions by individuals and businesses.  Want to support DNS education programs? Click here.
